Red Cross Emergency Shelter
|
| |
The Christian Life Center at Paris First UMC is the only designated Red Cross Shelter in Paris/Henry County. We learned quickly in January 2009 how to show radical hospitality when the EMA Director in Henry County asked us to open for the ice storm that crippled West Kentucky. We hosted 20-70 people for 4 days and nights. These people arrived cold and hungry. They were fed and bedded down on cots with blankets into a warm shelter. . Red Cross brought more blankets, personal supplies and extra cots.
Church volunteers helped set up cots and prepare for those needing the shelter. The members of Paris First UMC were focused on meeting the people’s immediate emergency needs. Many area churches from several denominations cooked and served meals.
The Red Cross Shelter is under the direction of the Disaster Shelter Committee of PFUMC. Training classes were held this past spring for volunteers and directors. IF you are interested in being a part of this team, please notify the church office @ 642-4764.
